Sport, a fundamental ally against cardiovascular risk in adolescence

On Saturday 14 March, the European Day for the Prevention of Cardiovascular Risk will be celebrated with the aim of raising public awareness of the importance of heart disease prevention. On the occasion of this date, from Campus Experience Real Madrid Foundation, we summarize the benefits that football brings to help reduce the cardiovascular risk of the population, especially at a young age.

In Spain, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), these diseases are the leading cause of death, causing almost 40% of all deaths. People who don’t do any physical activity are at greater risk for hypertension, atherosclerosis, and respiratory diseases. Therefore, WHO recommends physical activity for at least 30 minutes per day.

For this reason, our experts warn of the need to help new generations adopt healthy habits from an early age, and identify the main benefits that football brings to children to take care of their cardiovascular health:

  1. Weight control: one of the main causes of cardiovascular problems has to do with weight. According to the report “The State of the World’s Children 2019: Food and Nutrition”, carried out by Unicef, 20% of Spanish young people between the ages of 8 and 16 are overweight, while more than 14% are obese. Through the practice of sports such as football, young people engage in regular physical exercise, thus helping to maintain a healthy weight.
  2. Keeps the heart active: another major problem in today’s society is sedentary lifestyle. Young people have to replace sport with other forms of leisure that are unrelated to physical exercise, so their heart isn’t trained to make efforts, and they have to suffocate too much when climbing stairs or ramps. Thanks to the different exercises and trainings that are done when playing football, the heart is able to make efforts and be able to pump blood to our entire body without problem. This reduces the risk of heart attacks.
  3. It helps to lead a healthy diet: a balanced and healthy diet is necessary at any time of life, regardless of whether you are playing sports or not. However, it is essential to acquire these habits as soon as possible. For this reason, our training programmes not only help to improve technically, but also teach participants the importance of a balanced diet.

Health is fundamental for us and that is why we believe that playing sports, even with a playful character, changes the lifestyle and makes bad habits disappear.

From Campus Experience we inculcate through football the principles for a healthy life from the earliest age together, taking into account food, exercise and values.
